Liberty star Breanna Stewart breaks WNBA single-season scoring record in triumph over Wings.
On Tuesday night, Breanna Stewart established WNBA history.
Tuesday night in Texas, Stewart scored 40 points to lead the New York Liberty to a 94-93 victory over the Dallas Wings, the team's seventh straight victory.
Stewart's 885 total points this year, which broke the league's single-season scoring record, were also a result.
Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury, who scored 861 points in just 34 games during the 2006 season, was surpassed by Stewart.
Stewart played in his 38th game of the year on Tuesday night. This season, the WNBA added four extra games to the schedule, bringing the total to 40.
Stewart spent her first six seasons in the league with the Seattle Storm before joining the Liberty this season, averaging a career-high 22.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
Tuesday's game ended in a one-point victory for the Liberty after holding on in the final seconds.
With around 42 seconds left in the game, Stewart was fouled after the two teams had traded baskets for the majority of the time.
