NFL world reacts to Cowboys’ insane SNF performance
The Dallas Cowboys have had a string of disappointments and heartbreaks in recent years, but they appear poised to be a serious Super Bowl contender this season.
The Cowboys defeated the division-rival New York Giants 40-0 in the first Sunday Night Football game of the 2023 NFL season.
The Cowboys annihilated a Giants squad that had won an away playoff game in January.
The first touchdown of the game summed up the rest of the night for both teams. In the first quarter, a field goal attempt by Giants kicker Graham Gano resulted in a Cowboys touchdown.
Before halftime, the game appeared to be way out of hand. Dallas led 26-0 with 8:03 left in the second quarter.
With the score 40-0, many backups joined the game, including Dallas quarterback Cooper Rush, who replaced starter Dak Prescott.
"This is wild," NBC color commentator Cris Collinsworth exclaimed in the fourth quarter. I mean, it's insane. [The Cowboys] are annihilating the Giants. RUINING THEM. Some of these hits tonight have been incredible."
In addition to the shutout, the Cowboys had seven sacks on Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, two interceptions, one pick-six, one blocked field goal for a touchdown, and five forced fumbles.
The Dallas defense had a "all-time performance," according to the NFL's official Twitter account, and it's difficult to argue with that.
According to ESPN, the Cowboys are the first NFL team in the last 24 years to open the season with a road shutout of at least 40 points.
