Shakira performs at MTV VMAs for first time in 17 years after receiving Video Vanguard Award.

LOS ANGELES — Next month's MTV Video Music Awards will honor Shakira with the Video Vanguard Award.  

and Missy Elliott are among the previous honorees.She will also take the stage at the VMAs for the first time in 17 years. 

Throughout her career, the Colombian singer has won four VMAs,  

beginning with the International Viewer's Choice (Latin America North) in 2000. 

She is up for four awards this year, including artist of the year, best collaboration (for "XQG," with Karol G),  

and two nominations in the best Latin category — for the same Karol G collaboration and for her solo song, "Acróstico. 

Shakira is a real worldwide force whose distinctive musical skill continues to inspire and influence the public. 

She's a trailblazer for women all over the world, and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music,"
